Hi everyone, today’s Designer Interview is with Alison Wyatt of Hepburn Hardware and is about something special to me – cabinet hardware. Over the years I have traveled the world looking for just the right hooks, knobs and handles for my antique or property restorations and here today we have some of my favorites. Hepburn Hardware are simply beautifully hand crafted pieces that lift your furniture into art.
What is Hepburn Hardware about?
To put it simply, Hepburn Hardware is about quality finishes. There’s a large gap in the market for beautifully created cabinet hardware with an Australian edge. Designing hardware that suits our iconic lifestyle and interiors is giving people new options when styling their homes. They’re also noticing that by paying attention to these details, their renovations and builds are portraying a more considered and finished look.
How did you get started?
We renovated our kitchen and I couldn’t find any decent or interesting hardware. I was thinking I couldn’t see the wood for the trees but when I started asking around, everyone has the same issue. And so it began. I started Hepburn Hardware when I was on maternity leave and it just grew from there.
What was your inspiration?
I had Australian interiors as my main focus, as in the beginning there was little to compliment it. I love trawling mags, blogs etc to see what’s going on here and internationally so make sure my designs are on track.
What keeps you motivated?
Working for myself! It’s the best work/life balance I’ve ever had. I’ve got a young family, so I am very appreciative of how flexible my working day can be. I also really enjoy the mechanics of a small business and the thrill of the chase.
Where do you source your materials?
All our hardware is made in India, however our leathers come from Italy. I go there each year with new designs and have them prototyped. The design stage is by far my favorite part of the business.
What are the design trends you are seeing emerge for 2016/7?
Anything with a matte finish is becoming really popular for hardware. People are being more adventurous with their choices and moving away from the really shinny predictable hardware for their kitchens for example, to more muted and natural tones like oil rubbed bronze and leathers.
What is your favorite piece at the moment?
My favorite range at the moment would be our oil rubbed bronze finished hardware. It’s so versatile with where you can use it and crosses over many different interior styles.
What are you loving in your home?
My bed. I had it made from a drawing I did of an upholstered winged bed but most of all it’s so comfortable and gives me a fantastic night’s sleep. I appreciate it every morning.
